On 20thNovember it’s time to celebrate the UN’s Universal Children’s Day.
This is a day to highlight to the world the significance of young people, but ultimately to gain awareness of the importance of improving children’s welfare.
This, as many of you will know, is a subject close to my heart.
As a Trustee to Kicking Off, I have spent much time putting the needs, the education and medication of deprived children and young people first; trying to again awareness of this charity and their fundraising efforts to improve some of the hardest living conditions I’ve ever seen.
I’ve been privileged enough to go out to Ghana, twice, to help with the charity’s inspiring football and more recently, netball tournaments, helping thousands of young people.
These tournaments are #morethanjustagame – they are an essential and vital way to bring together cut off and isolated communities, who wouldn’t usually engage with the Western World. Through these tournaments we are able to educate and medicate around 500 children at a time. We have saved lives through detecting and treating many, many cases of malaria. We are able to give each child a goodie bag containing essential supplies; what’s more they are given clean water and a decent meal.
Communities from far and wide flock to these tournaments, tournaments that enrich the lives of so many, as well as saving lives and changing lives. Never have I been in such an atmosphere as happy, energetic, electric or inspiring than at these tournaments – it’s a sea of smiles, a harmony of song to the beat of a ‘thousand’ drums.
This year, Kicking Off has also hosted tournaments in European refugee camps – some of the most depressing places on earth.
Kicking Off is currently working on a huge sustainable clean water programme to bring clean water and sanitation to hundreds. All of this is alignedwith the UN’s 17 global sustainable development goals. These UN goals, which we work tirelessly hard to achieve, include:
Clean water and sanitation
Good health and wellbeing
Quality education
No poverty
Zero hunger
Gender equality

This year’s ball raised over £30,000 – not bad for a night of dancing and drinking into the small hours. If you’d like tickets to next year’s ball please do get in touch – it’s a night not to be missed!
