Healthy mental wellbeing is key to running a healthy business.
At a time when mental health features heavily in the press, affecting more people than any of us admit, it’s critical to know your limits.
As an SME business owner, whether you’re a new start up, entrepreneur or established business, you need to appreciate life isn’t all work, work, work.
It’s about addressing and finding a balance.
I should know, I deal with SME business owners on a daily basis. I know the struggles, challenges and rewards you face.
As the founder of several businesses – busy is my middle name! I’m involved in many charities, sitting on boards and actively participating in positions such as Trustee; plus I’m a busy mum. So here’s my guide to having a healthy and happy business and healthier and happier life.
Exercise
You’ve heard it a hundred times, but keeping your body active also keeps your mind active. Sitting all day isn’t good for us (anyone with a Fitbit knows that only too well!). Get up and stretch your legs, not only during the day but out of hours too. A walk, a run, a trip to the gym genuinely helps with your business brain.
FACT:Exercise means you are pumping more oxygen to the brain, which in turn increases memory and thinking skills.
Whenever I can I get out and run or get out on my bike (even when I’m not training for the London Marathon or the Land’s End to John O’Groats charity bike ride). It helps me not only to relax but also to process any problems that may have occurred during the working day.
Nutrition
Again, you’ve heard it before, but eating healthy all helps keep a healthy mind. I’m no nutritionist but I do know that eating a healthy diet helps me no end.
FACT:Smart foods are proven to help your neuroplasticity – the ability for your brain to work harder.
Processed stodge is all too easy and convenient but it won’t help you during busy times. It will make you lethargic and unproductive. Get as much fresh fruit and vegetables - smart foods include nuts, berries and green leaves - into your diet as you can, as well as plenty of water and oily fish.
The Day’s End
Know when to call it a night at the end of each day. You can’t burn the candle at both ends. We’ve all done it, yet you’ll end up making mistakes through tiredness and frustration. Know when to stop – take a break for lunch or down tools for the night.
FACT:The brain is at its most productive during the hours of 10am – 2pm and then again
from 4pm – 10pm.
A fresh and revived pair of eyes in the morning, or after a complete sidewards task, will make all the difference to productivity and efficiency.
Healthy Business Bank Balance
Needless to say, stress over your cashflow is not healthy. That’s where I can help. Whether you need a loan to finance an expansion, take over, investment or to fund a new contract my unique access to UK lenders will help.
Maybe you have an unexpected bill to pay, or you have funds drying up due to late paying customers; again, I can help.
FACT:There’s so much more to SME finance than just loans.
